Collegium Novum, the main building and seat of the authorities of the Jagiellonian University, is one of the most recognisable academic landmarks in Kraków. Located near the Planty Park, in the heart of the historic city centre, it has served as an important symbol of the University since the late 19th century.
The building was designed by Feliks Księżarski and constructed between 1883 and 1887 in the neo-Gothic style. Its impressive brick façade, pointed arcades, decorative gables and richly ornamented interiors make it one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Poland.
Today, Collegium Novum houses the offices of the University authorities and serves as a venue for some of the most important academic ceremonies, official meetings and conferences held at the Jagiellonian University.
One of the most representative spaces in the building is the University Assembly Hall. The hall is richly decorated with historical paintings, including works by Jan Matejko, and portraits of the University’s founders, rectors and benefactors. It is here that the University’s most solemn ceremonies, distinguished lectures and major institutional events take place.
Collegium Novum also holds an important place in the history of the University. In 1939, it was the site of Sonderaktion Krakau, the Nazi German operation during which professors and academic staff of the Jagiellonian University were arrested and deported to concentration camps.
In front of the building stands the Oak of Liberty, planted in 1919 to commemorate the restoration of Poland’s independence.
